It's About Creation (Inspirational Monday)

It's the first Monday of the month. Every first Monday I like to blog about something that inspires me to write. In this case I saw some pictures this week that triggered some deeper thoughts for me.

Here is a sculpture created by  Adrián Villar Rojas in 2009. It's called "My Dead Grandfather."

I can't tell you what the author's perspective was, nor his intention. A message of warning perhaps? A sad scene of nature defeating nature? Humans after all are part of nature. If I had been there in person, different feelings would likely have sprung to the surface.

These pictures remind me what IT's all about. When I see this, I think more about the massive undertaking of the artist. A behemoth constructed from clay, rocks, and wood, shaped from the world around us.

To me, IT's about creation. It's about making something that was not there before and connecting it to personal experience. The realm of imagination crossing paths with the realm of reality. Each influencing the other. That's why I write.

What  do you see in these pictures?

  1. To me it looks like the whale was trapped between the trees and drowned. Depressing I know.

Anyway, to me the best part of writing is telling a story in a way that hasn't been told before. I know there are no new stories, but there are always new ways to tell a story and that's the fun part.

  2. Fantastic, I am not sure what I see... the water has run out and left the whale beached? I see beauty as I say fantastic!

  3. Perhaps it's the nature of the materials or maybe it's my inclination as a fantasy author but I see a flying whale that's resting. Then again, the snow adds a more depressing element.

I like what you said about 'imagination crossing into reality' and 'each influencing the other'.

  4. Adrian is very gifted, he also looks young. Especially considering he did this back in 2009. I too would love to hear the backstory. His grandfather was larger than life, didn't quite fit in. Or lived moment to moment and found himself resting near the end. I don't know. But I could sit and look at that all day.

Nice to meet you, Von. I'm #192 on Alex's list. I'm also a new follower.

  6. I think it looks very sad. Like it's beached and it's been there that long trees have grown around it.

    Very powerful stuff

Stopping by on the Post A To Z Road Trip :)
